“Catastrophic” Floods Ravage Texas: 24 Dead, Children Missing From Washed-Out Summer Camp

In Just Hours, A Summer Retreat Turned Into a Disaster Zone

In the early hours of Friday morning, what began as a steady summer rain quickly turned deadly, as torrential storms dumped up to 10 inches of rain across central Texas. In a matter of hours, the Guadalupe River surged more than 22 feet, devastating rural communities, sweeping away homes and vehicles — and tragically, taking at least 24 lives.

Among the most gut-wrenching concerns: 23 to 25 girls still missing from Camp Mystic, a private Christian summer camp in Kerr County, nestled on the riverbanks where floodwaters hit hardest.

“This happened very quickly, over a very short period of time, that could not be predicted,” said Dalton Rice, Kerrville city manager. “There was no time to issue evacuation orders.”

Children Missing, Camp Inundated — Emergency Crews Mobilized

High Alert Around Texas Summer Camps

Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick confirmed that hundreds of emergency workers — including 14 helicopters and over 100 state troopers — had been deployed in an ongoing search-and-rescue mission focused on children missing from Camp Mystic.

The camp issued a heartbreaking statement via local fire departments:

“The highway has washed away… we are working with search and rescue. Please continue to pray and send any help if you have contacts to do so.”

Camp Mystic was one of over a dozen camps in the region filled with children for the July 4th holiday week. As floodwaters overtook the campgrounds with little warning, chaos ensued. Authorities say parents of missing children have been directly contacted.

Tragedy Strikes After Historic Rainfall — and Months of Drought

The Perfect Storm: Dry Earth, Sudden Deluge

Ironically, the region had been in the grip of a prolonged drought, leaving soil too dry to absorb sudden rainfall. The result: extreme surface runoff and rapid flash flooding.

The US National Weather Service (NWS) declared a flash flood emergency across Kerr and Kendall Counties — one of its most severe alerts — warning that roads would be washed out and conditions were life-threatening.

“Expect rapid rises on rivers and creeks,” the NWS in San Angelo posted early Friday. “Do not go out onto the roads.”

Sheriff Larry Leitha of Kerr County confirmed 24 fatalities and warned that “the entire county is an active disaster scene.”

Harrowing Survival Stories Emerge From the Floodwaters

A Mother’s Ordeal in the Dead of Night

Among the many survival stories, Erin Burgess from the Bumble Bee Hills neighborhood recalled the terrifying moment the flood entered her home at 3:30am.

“Within 20 minutes, water was coming through the walls and doors. My son and I floated to a tree and held on. My boyfriend and dog floated away — we found them later,” she told reporters. “What saved me was hanging on to my son. He’s over 6 feet tall.”

Like Burgess, many families are only now emerging to share accounts of sudden inundation, narrow escapes, and loss.

White House and State Leaders Respond

President Donald Trump, briefed aboard Air Force One, said:

“We’ll take care of them.”
He instructed federal agencies to coordinate closely with Texas officials and declared that any resources needed would be provided.

Dan Patrick echoed the urgency, urging the public to stay away from the disaster zones and allow emergency workers to operate safely and quickly.

State Senator Pete Flores emphasized the importance of the first 24 hours, calling them “critical to rescue efforts.”

Infrastructure Crippled, Communications Fragmented

Access to many flood-affected regions has been cut off by washed-out highways, making coordination difficult. Emergency responders have relied on helicopters, boats, and social media to track distress signals and missing persons.

Residents across social platforms, especially Facebook and Nextdoor, have been posting desperate pleas for updates on missing children, family members, and campers.

Flash Flood Risk Remains — More Rain Expected

Though Friday’s storm has passed, meteorologists warn of additional rainfall, particularly around Waco and areas downstream of Kerr County.

Flooding is expected to worsen along the Guadalupe River in the coming days, making further evacuations and damage likely.

“Conditions remain dangerous,” said the sheriff’s department. “People near streams or rivers should move to higher ground immediately and stay sheltered.”

Broader Storm System Hits Northeast as Well

Texas isn’t alone in facing the wrath of extreme weather. In Plainfield, New Jersey, strong storms led to the deaths of two men, aged 79 and 25, after a tree collapsed onto their vehicle. A third person also died elsewhere in the state.

The city of Plainfield cancelled its Fourth of July celebrations, stating it was “out of good conscience.”

Looking Ahead — What Leaders, Businesses, and Communities Must Do

As the immediate focus remains on rescue and relief, long-term concerns are surfacing:

  • Infrastructure resilience: Bridges, roads, and emergency systems must be upgraded to handle extreme weather.

  • Climate adaptation: Experts point to the need for flood risk modeling, especially in drought-prone areas now vulnerable to sudden rainfall.

  • Public-private coordination: CEOs and corporate leaders with operations in Texas should be prepared to support employees, logistics, and regional aid efforts.

For the Texas Hill Country — a region more accustomed to summer tourism, scenic vineyards, and quiet rural charm — the events of this weekend have changed the narrative.

From Drought to Disaster in Two Hours

In less than two hours, a beloved summer region turned into a deadly floodplain. Families remain separated. Communities are grieving. The search for survivors continues.

As emergency crews push forward, the nation watches in hope — and businesses and leaders prepare to support recovery efforts for the long road ahead.
